Good to know

What decides whether you can see the Milky Way

Three things: the Moon, your sky and the season. A bright Moon washes the Milky Way out, so plan around new Moon. City light hides it completely, so you need a rural site, ideally Bortle 4 or darker. And the bright core is only well placed in the evening sky from late spring to early autumn.

The planner combines these for your location. Bright satellite passes such as the International Space Station are easy to see with no equipment; an aurora is only likely at high latitudes or during a strong geomagnetic storm.
