Your data, explained plainly
Privacy policy
Celest is designed to work with as little personal data as possible. This page explains what is stored on your device, what may be sent to service providers, and the choices you control.
Last updated: 17 August 2026
Who is responsible
Celest is an independently operated astronomy website available at celestsky.com and celestsky.ro. The Celest operator is responsible for data processed directly through these websites.
For privacy questions or requests, email privacy@celestsky.com. This address must not be used for urgent or emergency matters.
What Celest stores on your device
Celest uses browser storage to remember your language, observing location, information-display preference, whether you dismissed the welcome guide, and your analytics choice. This information stays in that browser unless a feature described below sends it to a provider to produce a requested result.
Location and sky calculations
If you choose automatic location, your browser asks for permission first. You may instead search for a place or enter coordinates. Celest uses the selected coordinates to calculate local sky information and request location-specific weather or astronomy data.
The saved observing location is currently kept in your browser. Celest does not currently provide user accounts or a Celest profile database. Device-orientation data used by the live sky map is processed in the browser and is not intentionally recorded by Celest.
Analytics
Google Analytics is optional. Analytics storage is denied by default and the analytics library loads only after you choose Allow analytics. If allowed, Google may process page activity, approximate location derived from network information, browser and device information, and a pseudonymous first-party identifier. Advertising storage and ad personalization remain disabled by Celest.
You can change or withdraw this choice at any time through Cookie settings in the footer. Refusing analytics does not limit the astronomy features.
Services that help deliver Celest
To provide requested features, Celest may communicate with hosting and data providers including Google Analytics, Open-Meteo, NASA Earthdata, CARTO/OpenStreetMap map services, NOAA SWPC, CelesTrak, NASA JPL and COBS. These providers may receive technical request information such as an IP address, browser details, requested map area, coordinates needed for a forecast, or the requested astronomical object. Their own privacy terms apply to their processing.
Why data is used and how long it lasts
Essential browser preferences are used to provide the settings you request. Optional analytics is used only with your consent to understand aggregate site use and improve Celest. Browser preferences remain until you clear site data or change the relevant setting. Provider and hosting logs or analytics records follow the retention controls of those services.
Your choices and rights
- Refuse or withdraw optional analytics without losing access to Celest.
- Clear Celest browser storage and cookies through your browser settings.
- Deny or revoke browser location and motion permissions.
- Ask about access, correction, deletion, restriction, objection, or portability where those rights apply.
- Contact your competent data-protection authority if you believe your rights were not respected.
Changes to this policy
This policy will be updated when Celest adds accounts, newsletters, saved events, alerts, payments, advertising, or other data-processing features. The date at the top will show the latest revision.
