Good to know

Start with the constellations that are easy to find

A constellation is a region of the sky with a recognisable pattern of stars. There are 88 in all, but you only need a few to find your way around.

Ursa Major
the Big Dipper is high in the north on spring evenings; its two outer stars point to Polaris, the North Star.
Cassiopeia
a bright W or M shape on the opposite side of Polaris, easy to spot on autumn evenings.
Orion
the clearest winter constellation, with a belt of three stars in a row.
Cygnus
the Northern Cross, flying along the Milky Way on summer nights.
Scorpius
a summer constellation with red Antares; from Romania it stays low over the southern horizon.
